1927
JOSEP MARIA SUBIRACHS SITJAR is born on March 11 in Barcelona, on Pere IV street in the neighbourhood of Poblenou. Son of Josep Subirachs Casanovas, a labourer at the Rottier dyes factory, and of Josepa Sitjar Ferrer.

1931
Enrolls at the Centre Moral i Cultural school in Poblenou (Barcelona).

1935
On January 23, his sister Maria dels Àngels is born.
Commences studies in the school of the Pau i Justícia cooperative.

1936
Receives the Prize of Honour awarded by the Bori i Fontestà School Board in a children's art competition in Poblenou (Barcelona).

1938
To shelter from the bombings over the city of Barcelona, he spends the year in Martorelles with his mother and his sister. There, a cousin of his mothers', Dolors Casals Sitjar, is the village teacher.

1939
Continues his studies in the Escuela Mercantil academy, popularly known as L'Aliança and founded by the master Ildefons Pedra.
Receives a drawing prize.
